This Man Spends Only $2.75 PER YEAR On Food, but Eats However He Wants…Here’s How He Does It
This is Will Reid, a guy who many would refer to as “insanely frugal.” And when you see the steps he takes to eat for free, you probably won’t argue with the characterization.
Will is what’s known as a “freegan” or a “dumpster diver.” Which, in case the name didn’t give it away, means that he finds his meals almost exclusively from the food thrown out by supermarkets.
While it’s an exercising in efficiency and minimizes food waste, it’s a lifestyle that many people wouldn’t be too interested in adopting.
The food is normally perfectly edible and more often than not, fresh, but may have passed an expiration date or just been tossed to make room for new product.
He’s lived this life since August of 2014. He says, “My life isn’t tremendously different from other people’s. Other people go shopping for their food, I’ll go around back and see what’s available.” He says he can often can find a complete meal in just 15 minutes.
He began the practice after volunteering at Food Not Bombs, an organization that provides food to the homeless.
Proving that beggars CAN (sorta) be choosers, Will has also gone vegan since he started his dumpster diving days. I guess if I was find meals the way he was, I wouldn’t be too fired up about meat or dairy, either. He says he isn’t vegan out of concern for animals, but rather to create a bigger challenge in finding meals by dumpster diving.
His ultimate hope is that his efforts reveal to many how much food is wasted in this country. It’s estimated that half the fresh food in a supermarket ends up going to waste. He’s doing his part to reclaim some of that and put it to use.
In case you’re wondering where the “$2.75 per year” comes in. He was on the set of a film shoot a couple years ago and couldn’t find any food to claim through his usual avenues, so he broke down and paid $5.50 for a protein bar and Chex Mix. That comes out to $2.75 per year. That’s it. That’s the only food he’s purchased in two years of doing this!
