Science Says Couples That Get Wasted Together Stay Together Longer
As weird as it sounds, getting totally drunk with your significant other could be a GOOD thing for your relationship.
A study published in The Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Series found that couples who “actively” drink together are far less hung up on the partner’s negative qualities. To that point, these results were “significantly greater among wives.”
Couples over the age of 50 had better marriages if they drank together, put simply. But if one person’s a drinker and the other isn’t, that’s not a good thing. Those couples were less satisfied with their relationship than a regular couple would be.
The study states, “Wives who reported drinking alcohol reported decreased negative marital quality over time when husbands also reported drinking and increased negative marital quality over time when husbands reported not drinking.”
The study surveyed 4,864 married people who had been together for an average of 33 years. They were asked how often and how much they drank. Then they were asked if they found their spouse “irritating, critical, or too demanding.”
Even the scientists themselves aren’t sure what the reasoning is.
Dr. Kira Birditt of Michigan says, Were not sure why this is happening, but it could be that couples that do more leisure time activities together have better marital quality. The study shows that its not about how much theyre drinking, its about whether they drink at all.
But before you go throwing that bottle back with your SO, know that there are, of course, downsides to this practice.
Drinking among older people is leading to more cases of alcoholism, which can start when people are much younger.
Dr. Fred Blow says, Especially among baby boomers, who seem more accepting of alcohol use. Serious heavy drinkers have disruptive relationships with people, particularly their partners. Thats an important issue that should be looked at going forward.”
So there’s a point at which your drinking isn’t going to help anything at all.
