McDonald’s riskily uses real orphans and old folks to show the joy of giving

This South African commercial for McDonald’s features real-life orphans and real-life nursing home residents experiencing real-life happiness…

I’d say it’s a blend of aww on the surface with an uncomfortable subtext of possible exploitation, given that it is a highly successful corporation capitalizing on the plight of the marginalized.

But I haven’t given free ice cream to any orphans or old people today, so who am I to judge?

Without the McDonalds corporation there would probably be no Ronald McDonald House charities….but…whatever…capitalism is evil and all that. Wouldn’t want to humanize capitalists or anything.

Why are all the orphans of one race and the old folks of another?

I too, have lived in South Africa and agree with you, Jennifer. Although, I did find it interesting that a lot of these elderly folks actually seemed happy and took the ice cream from these orphans, being of a different race. I remember being a child in South Africa and growing up with the Apartheid-mindset being very acceptable and common. Blacks and whites never mixed the way this video is showing they do. Blacks were always looked at as being inferior, whites were doing them a favor by hiring them and letting them eat leftovers outside the house as soon as the employing family had finished their own dinner.
