Human-powered helicopter finally beats a challenge issued over 30 years ago

In 1980, the American Helicopter Association set up The Sikorsky Competition — A $250,000 prize goes to the first people who invent a human-powered helicopter that can meet the following criteria…

  • A flight lasting 60 seconds…
  • …that reaches an altitude of 3 meters (9.8 ft) at least once…
  • …and remains in a 10 meter (32.8 ft) square.

Despite many attempts, some almost successful, the challenge remained unbeaten…until last month.

On June 13, the AeroVelo Atlas team from the University of Toronto hovered their helicopter for 64.1 seconds and reached 3.3 meters, accomplishing the once-thought-impossible goal…
